New Badlands Tors and Pillars- Battlefield in a Box!

Good news! Gale Force 9 have just released some new terrain pieces for their Badlands range as well as re-releasing a couple of the old ones.

I was lucky enough to get my hands on the older Bluff and Plateau a while back but they have been...up until now...very hard pieces to get hold of! The smaller new Tors and Pillars are just what I need to bring them all together on the table. So this really is great news.

Badlands Bluff - Battlefield in a Box

The Battlefield in a Box Gothic range is impossible to get hold of these days but the Badlands range has always been even rarer. Not only are they perfect for Wild West games but they'd look pretty good in the Lost World and on Mars, too! I've been on the look-out for anything from the range for a long time but to no avail. So when I got an eBay alert that something was available I assumed it would be outrageously priced but I was in luck....they had the Badlands Bluff and not only was it on Buy-it-Now at retail price but they had a couple for sale! Blimey! I didn't hesitate in picking them up straight away.

These will do very nicely for our planned In Her Majesty's Name Mars campaign later on in the year...

The figures are from Ironclad Miniatures and make up our Jah Mors, Prince of Mars In Her Majesty's Name Company, painted for us, as always, by the inimitable Matt Slade of Glenbrook Games.

Frostgrave!

Over the last few months I've been picking up as much of the Battlefield-in-a-Box Gothic range as I can find and afford with a view to using it for the now-released and most excellent Frostgrave. Not an easy task as they are no longer made and much sought after. Still, I've managed to pick up just about enough for a Frostgrave table.

I did originally pick up a white felt sheet for the table but the contrast between it and the ruins was too stark nor do I want to add snow flock/tufts to the ruins as I want them to be useable for a variety of games.

I'm very tempted by some of the Cigar Box mats but they are kind of pricey and I'm not sure if there would still be a contrast issue between mat and ruins if I get one of the Wintery ones. There is a Town Square mat which I think would work for a more thawed out Frostgrave and which I could easily use for In Her Majesty's Name, though. Hmm. What I really want is for them to make a (non-Wintery) Gothic Ruins or Castle Ruins mat! I shall have to mull things over some more.

For now, I guess what I really need are some smaller rubble and ruined wall pieces to break things up a bit more. I did pick up these Pegasus Hobbies Castle Turret Ruins which'll help a bit in that regard.

Some Wizards and Apprentices along with a few soldiers will be heading off to the inimitable Matt Slade for painting in the next week or so. I'll also be having a go at painting up the Frostgrave Soldiers Box myself (shock!) along with some Fireforge Templar Infantry and Games Workshop Vampire Counts Skeletons! Who'd a thunk it! Still, Matt needn't worry too much as it'll be a basic dip job!

Anyway, it won't be too long before my son and I shall be entering the ruins of Frostgrave for the very first time! Exciting stuff!

Gothic Ruins - Battlefield in a Box

I've mentioned before how much I regret only recently coming across Gale Force 9s Battlefield in a Box range as most of the ranges are no longer being produced and are impossible to get hold of. That said, a while back Paul of Yours in a White Wine Sauce and The Man Cave pointed me in the direction of their Gothic range and while many of the bigger and more impressive pieces are also impossible to find, there are still various readily available pieces. Well, with the imminent arrival of Frostgrave I decided it would be a good idea to pick some up...

I'm not sure these pieces would be suitable for a historical game...the statues, for example, are very stylized...but they are perfect for fantasy and sci-fi and would do fine for Pulp or VSF games. As well as Frostgrave, I plan on using them for In Her Majesty's Name...the Society of Thule now have a new secret base and laboratory under the ruins of the evil Count's ancestral castle, high in the Alps!

Cobblestone Roads - Battlefield in a Box - Flames of War

I still haven't finished The Mysterious Wu Fang Battle Report so in the meantime I thought I'd show some pics of another recent terrain acquisition from the Battlefields in a Box range, their Cobblestone Roads for Flames of War.

Though made for 15mm Flames of War, I think they do pretty nicely as narrow roads for 28mm
games. Now I just need to get some Victorian houses....

Desert Hills - Battlefield in a Box

I'm a bit late to the party when it comes to the Battlefield in a Box range, having only come across them a couple of months ago when I picked up some of their Tribal Huts for my Darkest Africa/Lost World games. And that's a shame because most of the range is out-of-stock and it seems there are no plans to produce any more.

Nevertheless, I have managed to pick up some of their Large Desert Hills. There were several varieties of hill in the range but this is the only one I could find still being sold. If anyone knows where I can get hold of some of the other hills (here in the UK), please let me know!

Anyway, they look great and will come in handy for many an In Her Majesty's Name scenario. They'll also do nicely for crusader Lion Rampant, The Men Who Would Be Kings (by Dan Mersey to be released next year) and Dead Man's Hand (which I've just ordered).

Tribal Huts for a Lost World Game

In my ongoing efforts to find ready-made terrain for In Her Majesty's Name and, therefore, avoid having to actually paint or make anything myself, I came across Gale Force 9s Battlefield in a Box range. Their Tribal Huts, though supposedly for Fantasy, will be perfect for my planned Darkest Africa/Lost World games!
