Valley of the Ape

I noticed Valley of the Ape on the Wargames News and Terrain Blog earlier. It's currently pay-what-you-want on Wargame Vault. Here's the blurb:

Are You Brave Enough to Enter the Valley of the Ape?

Seek out fantastic treasure and capture the giant ape before other explorers beat you to the prize. In this adventure game for kids you create your own jungle terrain, scatter the encounter tiles (with hazards or treasures) across the valley, and send bands of toy soldier figures to seek fame and riches.
These rules provide guidelines for playing the game and suggestions for creating your own customized board and pieces. You’ll also need lots of six-sided dice and a few rulers. Valley of the Ape distills core miniature wargaming concepts of movement and attack to help kids learn the basics while enjoying the game. Each player gets a rules summary card customized to their particular explorers: intrepid British troopers, brave tribal warriors, fanatical dervishes, and a determined big-game hunter and his bodyguards. Encounter tiles provide objectives to explore: maybe they’re valuable treasures to retrieve, but they might also hide deadly jungle hazards! Beware Mungo, the giant ape who lives in the ruins at the valley’s heart...he protects his home and attacks anyone who ventures too close. Capture the giant ape to win the game, but greedy treasure hunters can collect enough riches to win, too!

Bonus Game!

Cowboys in the Canyon ports the Valley of the Ape rules to the Old West using the same rules, revised player cards, and desert encounters!

I think it might be time to introduce my just-turned-6-years-old daughter to wargames!

Gaming Dad

True for many of us...but I can now say I've got the t-shirt! A rather brilliant Father's Day pressie from my two little monsters.

The Coming of the Northmen!

My Vikings have arrived! Painted by the inimitable Matt Slade who has, as always, done a brilliant job of bringing this bloodthirsty Artizan lot to life!

There should be enough here for a SAGA faction or Lion Rampant army. Matt has avoided blue and given them a subtle green scheme. This is because I have another lot of Artizan Vikings of much the same size (due next month) which I want to use as opponents, so he'll paint those with a subtle blue colour scheme. The idea is that the colour schemes will be subtle enough that I can put them together to make one much larger army.

Not long now and I'll be able to introduce my son to Lion Rampant and have my first game of SAGA!

Saxon Church from Adrian's Walls

In preparation for some Dark Ages Lion Rampant and SAGA, I've splashed out and bought a Saxon Church from the brilliant Adrian's Walls. I'm really pleased with it and can't wait to see it in action...though it'll be a couple of months before I have enough Vikings for both me and my son to battle it out with!

Anyway, here are some more pics...

The other bits of terrain are from Alley Cat Studios. Now if I can just resist the temptation to pick up one of Adrian's Walls' Viking Longships...

Into the Unknown! Part One - Companies and Set-Up - IHMN AAR

So we're finally getting around to writing up the Lost World game we had a couple of weeks ago! My son took on the role of some Lost World Beasties while I played part of Lord Blackwood's Expedition as they enter the Lost World for the first time!

Background to Lord Blackwood's Expedition

Lord Blackwood and his river expedition into the depths of the Congo have discovered, after some weeks of travel, a hitherto unknown range of  high and treacherous mountains. The river they had been following, until recently slow and sluggish, had become increasingly narrow and fast-running until it entered a vast cavern at the foot of this mountain range.

After some days exploring the surrounding area, it had become clear the mountain range was impassable by foot. The river, however, despite its flowing underground, seemed to offer a chance of continuing with the expedition, flowing as it did from the cavern into a natural tunnel, wide enough to travel along in relative safety, despite the current...as long as it did not narrow any further or drop deeper underground. As long as this was the case, the river, it was surmised, must soon take them to the other side of this treacherous range of mountains.

Lord Blackwood made the decision to take the river and continue on with the expedition. He'd be damned if he was going to give up now.

After two days of anxious travel along the underground river, the party emerged into what appears to be a vast valley surrounded by towering cliffs many hundreds of feet high. The expedition sets up camp next to the river while Lord Blackwood takes a party of men to explore the surrounding jungle...

Some Lost World Aquarium Terrain

I've picked up a few more aquarium terrain pieces for my In Her Majesty's Name Lost World but they'll do just as well for 7th Voyage and Fantasy games as they will for Pulp and VSF. Anyway, here are a few pics:

Figures are a mix of Lucid Eye, Foundry and Forge of Ice. All figures painted by the inimitable Matt Slade
